Peace and empowerment through education

The Daughters for Life Foundation 4th Gala Dinner, 2016

Come and join us Wednesday, May 25, at the Carlu in Toronto for a truly inspiring evening. The Daughters for Life Foundation will be honouring Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace prize winner, with the Courage and Inspiration Luminary Award, for her courageous campaign to fight for education for girls in her native Pakistan, Maria Campbell, the Canadian writer, playwright, and teacher will be awarded the Trailblazer Luminary Award, and for the first time, the Life Achievement Luminary award will go the Stephen Lewis and Michele Landsberg‘s couple.

Veteran Israeli Shlomi Eldar, the Arab affairs journalist for Israel’s Channel 10 for the past two decades will be our Guest Speaker, sharing his insights on the power of education and promoting peace through education. Mr. Eldar is a close friend of our founder, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish.  He fielded the call while live on air on Channel 10 in January 2009 from Dr. Abuelaish just after his three daughters and niece had died after his flat was shelled in Gaza.  Mr. Eldar is also an author and accomplished documentary maker.

“I’m delighted that Shlomi can share his insights with us,” says Dr. Abuelaish. “We must work to stop the violence in the Middle East and our Gala dinner is a wonderful opportunity to continue this dialogue for peace. Since 2010, Daughters for Life has helped around 300 young women in tertiary education with grants and scholarships. I am so proud of all our scholars. Thank you so much for your support.”

In 2017, we hope to provide scholarships for a further 20 young women from the Middle East to study in the United States and Canada, we also want to provide funding for students at universities across the Middle East Region. This is how the funds raised from this year’s Daughters for Life Foundation Gala Dinner 2016 will be used.

The evening will also highlight the work of the Foundation since it began in 2010. And who better to do that than one of the Foundation’s graduates, Loureen Sayej, who will share her experiences.

ILAC, the International Language Academy of Canada, is the Premier Host and Sponsor of the gala this year. While Gomberg Mediation is the a Gold Sponsor and Spin Master is a Silver sponsor. We’d also like to share with you the sponsorship opportunities. Our valued sponsors will get a massive publicity on social and traditional media. We are expecting over 500 people, including philanthropists, businesspeople, and dignitaries.

Well-known radio personality, Erin Davis, the host of the Morning Show on 98.1 CHFI will MC the gala. “I’m pleased to be hosting the 4th Daughters for Life gala. We are thrilled to support an organization whose mission is making sure that girls receive every opportunity to succeed through education. It’s all we ever wanted for our own daughter.”

The Honorary Chairs for this year’s gala are Michael Dan, social entrepreneur and philanthropist and Suleiman Rashid, chartered accountant and partner in the firm Rashid & Quinney Professional Corporation.

During the evening, there will be music by The Royal Conservatory and an aerial art and circus performance by Angola Murdoch and Holly Treddenick of Lookup Theatre.  We will also hold an auction of items including a painting by one of Canada’s leading contemporary artists, Charles Pachter, and on the night, live painting by Mike HammerAmour luxurious gift baskets, photo sessions by Jerome and more.

The Daughters for Life Foundation is a registered Canadian charity that provides scholarships and other programs to students and since 2010 has helped 300 young women from the Middle East achieve their potential, irrespective of ethnic or religious background.

We are planning that through the 2016 Gala we can offer 15 more scholarships at tertiary level in North America and 120 financial awards for students at Middle East universities, empowering even more young women who could not otherwise afford to pursue higher education.

We hope you can join us at the Daughters for Life Foundation Gala 2016. Thank you for your generosity in supporting the next generation of Middle East women leaders.
