Reflections of a DFL Graduate: Dania Mahadin

Our first graduate of 2024, Dania Mahadin, has achieved remarkable success as a young Jordanian scholar graduating from York University’s Specialized Honors Civil Engineering program. This prestigious program is part of the Lassonde School of Engineering, renowned for its excellence in STEM education.

Dania’s journey with the Daughters for Life Foundation (DFL) is particularly special, as she was the only scholar selected from the 2020 program cycle. Reflecting on that time, the world was grappling with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted life across all sectors, including academia. Many universities altered their plans and withdrew scholarship positions, limiting DFL’s partnerships that year. However, York University remained a steadfast partner, allowing us to award a full scholarship to Dania.

A Grateful Heart and a Dream Fulfilled

In a recent interview, Dania expressed her heartfelt gratitude to both DFL and York University. “I’d definitely start by saying thank you,” she shared. “I always say to people when they ask [about my experience] that DFL and York gave me the opportunity to dream.”

From a young age, Dania was a seeker of opportunities. During high school, she dreamed of studying abroad and was inspired when she learned about a DFL scholarship recipient from her school. This inspired her to pursue her own application, ultimately bringing her dream within reach.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including travel restrictions that initially forced her to study remotely from Jordan, Dania persevered. The seven-hour time difference between Toronto and Jordan was just one of many obstacles she overcame through dedication and resilience.

Adapting to a New Environment

Eventually, Dania was able to travel to Toronto and join her cohort at York University’s Keele campus. Adjusting to a new culture and way of life was a significant experience. Her previous exchange program at Virginia Tech provided some familiarity with North American life, which eased her transition to living in Canada.

Remote study continued for a time as the university prioritized student safety amid evolving public health guidelines. Despite the isolation, Dania adapted by exploring the city and connecting with friends from other universities, building resilience and forming lasting memories.

The Personal Impact of a DFL Scholarship

Dania emphasized the profound personal growth she experienced as a DFL Scholar. “In a different country, you [need to] rely on yourself most of the time,” she noted. She empathized with fellow students who, while physically together on campus, were often isolated due to restrictions. As these lifted, her student life began to flourish, marking the fresh start she had long anticipated.

Her journey with DFL has reinforced her belief in helping others, aligning with her role in DFL’s Mentorship Program during her undergraduate years. This initiative connects DFL program applicants with active scholars who can offer guidance and insights. Dania’s involvement, whether through advice or CV proofreading, allowed her to give back. “I see helping others as [my] legacy,” she explained passionately. Inspired by DFL’s support, she aspires to impact the world positively.

Giving Back and Future Aspirations

Dania is committed to giving back, particularly in her home country of Jordan. She envisions creating opportunities for middle and high school girls in STEM, especially those without strong support networks, such as orphaned students.

Currently, Dania works as a Digital Innovation Intern at WSP, a leading design and engineering consulting firm. She is exploring her options for a “dream career,” with a Master’s degree as a potential goal, though she has not yet decided on a specific program or university.

Words of Wisdom for Future DFL Scholars

Dania offers valuable advice for future DFL Scholars, reflecting her personal values and experiences over the past four years at York University.

“My advice is simple: we all come from different cultures and backgrounds. They [all] have pros of their own, principles of their own. Try to refine your values. Take the good in your new environment and let it improve you,” she advised.

“Always think of how to give back. Dr. Abuelaish’s legacy should be central to how DFL scholars conduct themselves, and remember to always focus on how to return that generosity extended to you back to others.”

Dania Mahadin’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, gratitude, and giving back. Her story inspires us all, reminding us of the lasting impact of education and opportunity.
